What we see in Lakewood homes
Mid-century houses, several furnaces later. Lakewood incorporated in 1969, and the 1970 census already counted more than 90,000 residents, so much of the city's housing is older than the city itself. Many of those ranches and split-levels have had two or three furnaces on the same original ducts. When a newer furnace still leaves the back bedrooms cold, small returns and leaky duct joints are usually why.
The west side sits higher. Lakewood rises toward the foothills — Green Mountain tops out at 6,854 feet — and homes on the west side sit well above downtown Denver's 5,280. My furnace is fairly new, but the back bedrooms stay cold. Why?
In older Lakewood homes the ductwork usually wasn't redone when the furnace was replaced. Open every register, keep returns clear, and put in a fresh filter. If the rooms still lag, request a visit — we check airflow before suggesting anything else.
Is it normal for the furnace to run almost nonstop in a cold snap?
