Furnace not heating in Denver? 5 checks before you call

If the furnace won't heat, run these five checks before you request a visit. One page for the Denver metro area, not a page per city.

Smell gas? Leave the house right away without touching switches or the thermostat, and call your gas utility from outside. Once it's safe, request a visit for repairs.

Fall Heat Ready specials: Furnace startup — $120 · Duct cleaning — from $350 · Startup + duct cleaning combo — from $375 · 10% off humidifier or UV installs. Offer ends November 1, 2026.

Five checks

  1. 1

    Thermostat

Set it to heat, then set the temperature above the room. If it isn't calling for heat, the furnace won't start. A furnace that never gets that call will sit there, even when the house is cold. Set heat, raise the setpoint, and wait to hear it try. Do not open panels while you check.

  2. 2

    Thermostat batteries

Check the thermostat batteries. Bad thermostat batteries are a reason nothing turns on. If the screen is blank, the furnace never gets a signal. Swap the batteries, set the thermostat back to heat, and set it above the room temperature again. Thermostat wiring is not a homeowner job.

  3. 3

    Breaker and outdoor disconnect

Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect. A tripped breaker or an off disconnect cuts power even when the thermostat is set right. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, shut the furnace down and request a visit. If the breaker and the disconnect are already on, it's a service call. Do not open panels.

  4. 4

    Fresh filter

A clogged filter can starve the unit and trip a limit. Swap a filthy filter if you have a spare, and replace a clogged filter first if you can. Homeowner filters, including the common 16×25×1 size, are in the DIY shop. If the filter sits behind a panel you would have to pull, stop — that's our job. If it still won't fire after a fresh filter, shut it down and request a visit.

  5. 5

    Vents

Keep supply and return vents open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or boxes. A blocked return starves the furnace the same way a clogged filter does. A register brush only gets the last two feet at the grille. It is not a whole-home duct cleaning. If the house is still cold after the vents are open and the filter is fresh, request a visit.

Filters and homeowner supplies are in the DIY shop.

What should I check if the furnace won't heat?

Run the five checks on this page: thermostat on heat and set above the room, thermostat batteries, the breaker and the outdoor disconnect, a fresh filter, and supply and return vents open and not blocked. If it still won't fire, request a visit. Do not open panels.

When should I shut the furnace down?

If it is still cold, there is a weird smell, or the breaker trips, shut it down and get a pro. Do not open panels.

What does the visit include?

We diagnose first, then give a plain-language finding. Repair happens only with the homeowner's OK.

Will you try to sell me a new system?

Only if the one you have is actually done. We repair first. If replacement is the honest path, you'll get numbers and time to think.
