What is furnace short cycling?
Short cycling is when the furnace turns on, runs for a short time, shuts off before the house reaches the set temperature, and then starts again — over and over. It wears parts out faster and leaves rooms uneven.

If the furnace keeps turning on and off before the house warms up, run these five checks before you request a visit. One page for the Denver metro area.
Smell gas? Leave the house right away without touching switches or the thermostat, and call your gas utility from outside. Once it's safe, request a visit for repairs.

A clogged filter is the most common reason a furnace runs a few minutes, shuts off, and starts again. The heat exchanger overheats, the high-limit switch cuts the burners, it cools off, and it tries again. Put in a fresh filter that matches the size printed on the old one. Homeowner filters are in the DIY shop.
2
Open every supply register and keep returns clear of furniture, rugs, and boxes. Closing registers in unused rooms does not save money — it chokes airflow and can push the furnace into the same overheat-and-restart loop as a dirty filter.
3
Check the batteries and where the thermostat sits. One mounted near a supply register, in afternoon sun, or next to a lamp or TV can think the house is warm and shut the furnace off early. Set it to heat and a few degrees above the room, and watch one full cycle.
4
High-efficiency furnaces vent through two plastic (PVC) pipes on an outside wall or the roof. Drifting snow or frost buildup on those pipes can make the furnace shut down and retry. Gently clear snow away from the pipe openings if you can reach them from the ground. Do not cut, pull, or take apart the pipes.
5
Write down how long it runs and how long it rests, and whether it shuts off before the house warms up. A furnace that lights, runs a few seconds, and goes out is a different problem than one that runs five minutes and stops. That note saves time when we get there.
Still cycling after a fresh filter and open vents? Shut it down and request a visit. Do not open panels.

The usual causes are a clogged filter or blocked returns making the furnace overheat, a thermostat that is misplaced or has weak batteries, blocked outside vent pipes on a high-efficiency furnace, a dirty flame sensor, or a furnace that is too big for the house. The first three are safe to check yourself. The rest are a service call.
It usually means something is protecting itself — like the high-limit switch shutting off an overheated furnace. That is a warning, not a fix. If it keeps happening after a fresh filter and open vents, shut the furnace down and request a visit. If you smell gas, leave first.

Yes. If the burners light for a few seconds and then go out, the flame sensor may not be proving the flame. Cleaning or replacing it means opening the furnace, so that is our job, not a homeowner fix. Do not open panels.
Yes. Many Denver metro homes have high-efficiency furnaces with PVC intake and exhaust pipes on a side wall. Drifts and frost can block them after a storm. Clear snow away from the openings from the ground only. If the furnace still won't stay running, request a visit.
We diagnose first, then give a plain-language finding. Repair happens only with the homeowner's OK.
